D,L-Ornithine-d3 (2,3,3) is a deuterated form of ornithine, D and L isoforms. D,L-Ornithine-d3 is intended for use as an internal standard for the quantification of ornithine by GC or LC-MS.
Ornithine is a metabolically active non-protein amino acid that serves as an important precursor for the synthesis of the pyrrolidine nucleus, which is found in pyrrolizidine alkaloids. L-Ornithine is a metabolite of L-arginine, and it plays a central role in the urea cycle; its ingestion has been shown to acutely increase plasma growth hormone levels in humans. Ornithine is a precursor of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) and of proline (following metabolism by ornithine amino transferase). Ornithine also plays an important role in the regulation of several metabolic processes leading to diseases like hyperornithinemia, hyperammonemia, gyrate atrophy, and cancer in humans.
